i feel like where la la land truly failed was just the cosmic dissonance it had. to present this movie of two white characters as having been “such a struggle” and “repression being the enemy” yet willfully ignoring the issues within itself.

like the fact that full stop sebastian should’ve been a black man because jazz is an art form rooted in black culture and black history and to have the only black character in the movie be the “sellout who killed jazz” is insulting.

and mia should’ve been a woc, no question. because to present this character of a woman who is struggling to be an actress, who keeps getting doors shut in her face be a white woman who is one of the most successful actresses of now is blissfully ignorant. mia’s story would’ve been more moving if she was asian or latinx or black or any of the underrepresented racial groups in hollywood BECAUSE of the fact that as women of color it is hard to make it in an industry that type casts you as stereotypes and doesn’t allow you to be a human being. mia being a woc overcoming the racial biases in hollywood and becoming successful to me would’ve made this movie more tolerable than what it was.
